Environment, Social, Governance

Sif launched the monopile at the beginning of this millennium and has now produced over 2,200 monopiles. These monopiles contribute to the energy transition by serving as the foundation of offshore wind energy. However, we think this is not enough and we have chosen Sustainable Development Goals created by the United Nations that will guide our ESG improvement.

Our efforts, targets and the application of our resources for contributing to a more sustainable world are specifically aimed at numbers 7, 9, 12, and 13 of the Sustainable Development Goals created by the United Nations.

SDG 7 Clean Energy

SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production

SDG 13 Climate Action

For more information on the specific ESG topics visit our environmental, social, and governance page.

From 2023, Sif manufactures on a zero safety-incident basis and hence contributes to SDGs 9 and 12.

Sif considers safety the most important precondition to operate and as such, safety is the first priority in all our activities. Our people are our most important resource and for us it is of the highest importance that everyone gets home safe after a day’s work.

From 2025, Sif’s need for power is fully based on renewable energy and contributes to SDGs 7, 12, and 13.

Our commitments include the replacement of the pre-heating using gas torches by induction in 2021-2022. Also heavy transport vehicles will be fueled by bio diesel and alternatives will be explored for shipping. The use of diesel for transportation and natural gas for heating are responsible for 94% of our CO2 exhaust.

From 2027 Sif manufacturers on a zero waste basis and contributes to SDGs 12 and 13.

Zero waste refers to the circularity of the products we manufacture and to the process itself. Circularity requires a supply chain approach, and together with our main supplier of steel, Dillinger, Sif has embarked on a plan for circular CO2 neutral production of steel by 2045.

Sif maintains leadership in the global supply of offshore wind and contributes to SDGs 7, 9, 12, and 13.

Sif now produces monopiles for 60 meters water depth, tens of kilometers from the coast. Up to this depth, a monopile is economically and technically the best solution. Floating wind farms are the sole option for deeper waters. Sif participates in studies to make floating solutions technically and economically feasible.

Close to 100% of the foundations that Sif delivers are for offshore wind farms. Sif also actively strives to reduce its carbon footprint by producing and transporting in a smarter and more sustainable way.

In addition, we facilitate for renewable energy initiatives on our company site such as a next-generation offshore wind test turbine operational since 2019. We aim to be CO2 neutral for all our primary business activities in the Netherlands by 2030. If we include the green power generation of our test turbine, we are already CO2 neutral in 2021.
